Look at what competitors rank for

Use Ahrefs, Semrush, or even the free Google Search Console to check what keywords nearby breweries rank for. Focus on #1–3 rankings, keywords with "near me" or location modifiers, and searches with 50–500 monthly volume. Don't copy — understand what's achievable in your specific market.

Ask your customers directly

Interview 5–10 regulars: "How did you find us the first time?" You'll hear things like "searched for dog-friendly bars with a patio" or "wanted sour beers, found your Instagram." These real answers are keyword goldmines — they reveal how your actual customers think and search.

Go to Search Console → Performance → Queries. You'll see every keyword bringing you traffic, how many clicks and impressions each gets, and your current ranking position. Focus on keywords where you rank #3–8 — a small optimization push can move these to #1 and double your clicks overnight.

Use Google's autocomplete

Type your primary keyword into Google and read the autocomplete suggestions — those are real searches with real volume. "Breweries near" autocompletes to "near me," "near me open now," "near me with food." Each of those is a keyword worth targeting.

The Content Strategy for High-Converting Keywords

For "Breweries Near Me" and Local Intent Searches

Create a page titled something like "[Your City] Craft Brewery Guide: Where to Find Great Beer." Include an overview of your city's beer scene, highlight your brewery and what makes it distinct, mention a handful of nearby breweries (yes, linking to competitors is fine — it shows confidence and builds authority), and add a map. This kind of page ranks for local brewery searches and establishes you as the go-to source for craft beer in your city.

For Beer Style and Experience Keywords

If you specialize in hazy IPAs, barrel-aged beers, or sours, create dedicated pages or blog posts around those styles — your philosophy, your process, what makes yours different. Someone searching "best hazy IPA brewery near me" is looking for exactly what you offer. Give them a page that makes it obvious you're the answer.

Keywords to avoid: "How beer is made," "beer history," "homebrewing tips," "beer recipes." These bring curious browsers, not paying customers. Every hour spent ranking for informational keywords is an hour not spent ranking for intent keywords.

Measuring Whether Your Keywords Are Working

Track these four metrics monthly:

If you're getting impressions but low clicks, your page title or meta description is weak — rewrite it to be more compelling. If you're getting clicks but no conversions, your page isn't persuasive enough — revisit the content against the brewery website checklist.

Local SEO timelines are faster than national SEO because the competition is geographically limited. You're not competing with every brewery in America — just the ones in your city. That's an achievable fight, and breweries that execute consistently win it within six months.
